Poison ivy treatment is now, luckily, commercially available from popular skincare makers. However, you can easily make your own treatments by using common household items.

An Introduction to Poison Ivy

Approximately 85% percent of those who come into contact with poison ivy will get an allergic reaction. Effects include having rashes, blisters, and of course, the notorious itch. Urushiol is the main culprit, a yellowish substance that oozes out from the damaged parts of poison ivy. Skin reactions may occur even after just one encounter with poison ivy.

Avoiding contact with poison ivy may seem like an obvious precaution, but urushiol can easily get rubbed off onto other items or even pets. It can last on objects for years and still cause a skin reaction, especially if the environment is dry. To combat the effects of poison ivy, create a homemade treatment of 50% alcohol and 50% vinegar. It effectively reduces the itch immediately after application.

Do you have a green tomato? Slice it up and squeeze the juice onto the affected area of the skin. If you already have severe rashes and itching, use a solution made by mixing equal parts of buttermilk, vinegar and salt. Another effective all-natural treatment is by boiling willow leaves in a cup of water. Apply the skin care solution with cotton balls on the affected area of the skin. Another common house treatment is to make a paste made from baking soda and water. This is good for drying up rashes as well. For quick relief, the gel-like residue from the stems of jewelweed or touch-me-not can be used on the skin to control the itch. Interestingly, these plants often grow just next to poison ivy, giving you a quick remedy.
